SINCE 1901
One of America's Oldest Sock Companies
The Railroad Sock name first appeared in advertisements in 1901 – but the history goes back to 1896 when William G. Leininger partnered with his cousin George H. Leininger to start a hosiery mill in Mohnton, PA (near Reading –– home of the Reading Railroad). After two years, they divided and each started their own knitting mills.
William founded and ran multiple mills from 1898 onward including Railroad Sock, which became popular due to the high-quality, durable work sock worn by the local rail workers. Leininger’s family continued operation through three generations into the 1970’s.
Railroad Sock has passed hands a couple times since then and even migrated over 1,000 miles southwest to Grain Valley, Missouri (near Kansas City).
Now under the watchful helm of Amanda Kunkel-Beech, Railroad Sock continues to innovate, offering a comprehensive product line of over 100 styles and colors that cover work, sports, and leisure in cotton, wool, and poly blends – which you’ll see throughout this site!
Since the beginning of the 20th Century, our mission has always been to provide customers with quality, American-made products at a competitive price. It’s a tradition we proudly continue today.
